The Mists of Avalon was my favorite book up until the day I found out about what a horrible person MZB was. The themes that attracted me were -Well developed and interesting female characters -Paganism/sort of "realistic magic" -Historical fiction (but this part is not the focus) -Beautiful writing with powerful imagery -The Arthurian/celtic background is also interesting.
