In Love à la Mode the Irishman is the hero and, as such, is the first sympathetic Irish character that Macklin draws. While the comments of the other men lead the audience to believe that Calligan O'Bralligan will be yet another Irish stage buffoon, Macklin plays against their expectations and exhibits a (rare) personal fondness for his own. Greeting the audience at the start of Knaves’s revival of Charles Macklin’s farce Love a la Mode (), the actor representing Mordecai expresses his pleasure at seeing ‘so many hardcore eighteenth-century fans here tonight’.While a fitting address for the company with whom I was joined for my viewing at Smock Alley, a group of academics up in Dublin for day one of the ‘Irish and.

Perfect for lovers of Chopped Teen Tournament and Kids Baking Championship, as well as anyone who dreams of a romantic trip to France, Love la Mode follows Rosie and Henry as they fall in love with food, with Paris, and ultimately, with each other.   Love a la Mode is a sweet combination of cooking competition and YA rom com, and the results are delicious. Henry and Rosie are so adorable together (Henry’s side of the crush is especially endearing), and seeing them try and balance their blossoming romance with the pressures of school and competitive cooking made for a delightful read.

Ultimately, despite an entirely inevitable ending that borders on saccharine, the story is infused with such joy and love—and delectable dishes—that readers will simply gobble it up whole. Like a souffle: bright, frothy, and entirely delicious.

I love stories where everyone is a fish out of water, and where everyone has something vital in common. I really wanted to like this book, but with Henry’s nonstop emotional roundabout, Rosie’s last-minute development and acknowledgement, and the lack of depth in the details, when I finished it, I was disappointed and unsatisfied.

I mean, they’re attending culinary school in PARIS–this book checks off so many boxes for me, and fortunately it delivers.
